CPU Scheduling Algorithms

CPU scheduling determines which process should use the CPU when multiple processes are ready to run. Different scheduling algorithms use different rules to select the next process.

This calculator compares four common CPU scheduling algorithms: FCFS, SJF, Round Robin, and Priority Scheduling.

FCFS vs SJF

FCFS (First Come First Serve) executes processes according to their arrival order. SJF (Shortest Job First) selects the available process with the shortest burst time.

SJF can provide a lower average waiting time, while FCFS is simpler because it only needs the arrival order.

FCFS vs Round Robin

FCFS allows a process to run until it finishes. Round Robin is preemptive and gives each process a fixed time quantum before moving to the next process.

SJF vs Priority Scheduling

SJF selects a process based on its burst time, while Priority Scheduling selects a process based on its assigned priority.

Round Robin vs Priority Scheduling

Round Robin focuses on giving processes a fair share of CPU time, while Priority Scheduling focuses on executing higher-priority processes first.

CPU Scheduling Comparison

Algorithm Type Selection Preemptive
FCFS Queue Arrival order No
SJF Shortest job Shortest burst No
Round Robin Time sharing Time quantum Yes
Priority Priority based Priority value No

Which CPU Scheduling Algorithm Is Best?

There is no single best CPU scheduling algorithm for every situation. The appropriate algorithm depends on factors such as waiting time, response time, fairness, process length, and system requirements.
