What is Round Robin Scheduling?
Round Robin is a preemptive CPU scheduling algorithm designed to give each ready process a fair share of CPU time. Each process runs for a fixed period called the time quantum.
Is Round Robin Preemptive or Non-Preemptive?
Round Robin is a preemptive CPU scheduling algorithm. Each process gets the CPU for a fixed amount of time called the time quantum. When the time quantum expires, the running process can be interrupted and moved back into the ready queue.
How Round Robin Works
Processes are placed in a ready queue. The CPU executes the first process for one time quantum. If the process is not finished, it is moved to the back of the queue and the next process runs.
What is a Time Quantum?
The time quantum is the maximum amount of CPU time a process receives during one turn. A smaller quantum creates more frequent process switches, while a larger quantum allows processes to run for longer periods.
Round Robin Scheduling Formulas
Turnaround Time = Completion Time − Arrival Time
Waiting Time = Turnaround Time − Burst Time
Advantages and Disadvantages of Round Robin
| Advantages of Round Robin | Disadvantages of Round Robin |
|---|---|
| Provides fair CPU time to processes. | Performance depends on the time quantum. |
| Works well for time-sharing systems. | Very small time quanta can cause many context switches. |
| Reduces the chance of process starvation. | A very large time quantum makes it behave more like FCFS. |
| Simple to implement using a queue. |
Round Robin Example
Suppose several processes are waiting in the ready queue and the time quantum is 2. Each process can execute for up to 2 time units before the CPU moves to the next ready process.
If a process finishes before the quantum expires, the next process runs immediately.
